Punjabis (also known as Sikhs around the world) started wrestling here in Canada in the seventies and from there it just took off. Currently Punjabi wrestlers represent Canada at the International stage. Currently the sport of wrestling is one of the major sports played amongst the Punjabi community in western Canada. In the area known as Lower Mainland in BC, Canada currently has around eight akahads (wrestling clubs). Miri Piri wrestling club is one of the eight. Though there is not enough money in wrestling most people play the sport for pride.

Local tournaments are held all over Canada and the US in the summer months to keep the sport alive and keep the younger generation interested in the sport. Most of these tournaments are organized well by local community volunteers and financed by donations from the general public and local business owners.
